Giraffes and elephants and models, Oh My!

First stop on my Kenya adventure: Nairobi – home of elephant orphanages, giraffe parks, and supermodels.

African Woman cover- Nairobi- models-fashion- downright red - Laurel Schaffer

Cover of the March/April issue of "African Woman"

Really, all of downtown Nairobi seems to be super tall, super lithe, super beautiful women.  Street fashions ran the gamut from strictly conservative office attire to sky scraper heels and itty bitty hemlines- shades of Manhattan.  Sadly, my photo skills are not in the category of The Sartorialist, so you’ll have to take my word for it.  However, I did search out some major publications to see what the editors had to say:

Fabulous beaded cape by Patricia Mbela

I immediately fell in love with designer Patricia Mbela.  Her work is dramatic, captivating and shows meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail.   I know many times the spreads in Vogue, Harpers and the like have little connection with womens’ actual lives, and are too extreme to even serve as inpiration.  But with Ms. Mbela’s work, I feel that art and wearability have come together so beautifully.  More on this designer coming soon…
